Global support speeds a complex repatriation
A young American missionary was working in Chad, Central Africa, when he suffered severe, prolonged headaches. With no local hospital facilities available, Intana Global planned an immediate airlift, but night landing was impossible in the remote location. An emergency evacuation to Nairobi was arranged, and Meningitis was diagnosed. Unable to get suitable treatment back in Chad, we managed a complex repatriation to the USA via Amsterdam and Minneapolis, using multiple providers along the way.
The whole story
After four days suffering painful headaches, one of our client’s US missionary employees badly needed to know what was wrong. But he was unable to get a medical diagnosis in Chad, Central Africa, where he worked.
When medical emergencies happen, Intana Global’s first reaction is to find urgent treatment and care in a safe and well-equipped environment. In this patient’s case, we confirmed and planned immediate emergency evacuation to the nearest appropriate facility, so the condition could be accurately diagnosed and successfully treated:
- Plans to evacuate the patient immediately were delayed because landing an air ambulance was impossible at night in the patient’s remote location
- To provide the best support, Africa’s leading health development organisation AMREF was appointed to airlift the patient to Nairobi for an MRI scan and pathology studies
- After a successful airlift, the patient was successfully assessed and diagnosed with Meningitis
- Hospital standards were inadequate for treating the patient in Chad therefore repatriation to the US was planned
- An experienced Intana Global team managed the entire - and complex - journey from Nairobi to the patient’s home in the US via Amsterdam and Minneapolis, helped along the way by multiple providers.
